Tainá: Indigenous-Led AI for Climate Resilience and Biodiversity Monitoring

About

How this project makes an impact

GainForest has been operating for 8 years at the intersection of AI, satellite/drone monitoring and blockchain to reverse deforestation and advance nature protection. Indigenous peoples and local communities are the stewards for ecological resilience in the world’s most bio-diverse regions (e.g. rainforests), but their work is critically underfunded.

With the pressures of climate change and land-use change, irreversible loss of biodiversity and connected ecological knowledge is taking place. Compounding this reality is the lack of data available - the world's largest rainforests hold just 1% of global biodiversity data.

How AI drives resilience

AI and technology gives agency to indigenous persons and local communities to collect, own, and use their own environmental data to guide local adaptation strategy and access funding for conservation. This innovative bottom-up monitoring process is grounded in Data Councils, which are pioneering physically localized data control and the basis for longer-term economic stability. The AI Tainà platform analyzes drone and phone images, audio recordings, and traditional knowledge to create accurate, verified and structured impact reports for funding. The smarter collation of various ecological data ensures that local adaptation strategies and policy can also be driven by their unique insights.

A huge wealth of ecological data will be created through active monitoring in 10+ Indigenous territories (100,000+ minutes of audio and 50,000+ georeferenced images) - to support this, knowledge will be documented in 3+ Indigenous languages and 100+ Indigenous members trained as Tainá operators/citizen scientists. The creation of 5+ functioning Data Councils will provide innovative governance by developing data-sharing protocols.

Interview question

"Gainforest is a young organisation at the start of its journey, one built around the core concept of community data empowerment - what is your ultimate impact objective and what is AI's added value in getting you there?"

Answer

"GainForest aims to establish a transparent and community-driven model for regenerative finance through EcoCerts, ecological certificates that document and verify local conservation outcomes from the bottom up. Our objective is to empower communities to measure, report, and evaluate their own environmental impact, ensuring they can tell their own stories through data. This approach strengthens local ownership, independence, and long-term sustainability in both environmental governance and financial infrastructure. AI adds value by making this process more accessible, diverse, and scalable. It helps communities overcome technical barriers in data collection, processing, and storytelling, while interpreting complex and multilingual information from the field. Beyond efficiency, AI supports capacity building enabling people to manage, verify, and share their impact directly creating a future where technology serves as a bridge between ecological stewardship and equitable finance."
