Net zero is being rewritten. There is a gap between the emissions reductions companies can deliver themselves and the future world their net zero targets assume. This paper reframes what net zero means: to keep it as a mechanism for corporate action, to motivate companies to help build the world their targets assume, to raise ambition, and to increase honesty about what to expect from companies.
